Donald Trump’s comment that “when Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best” undoubtedly refers to folks like Alfredo Lopez.
Lopez, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, was arrested Monday night for his ninth drunken driving offense in the last 10 years, WHTM reports.
Police reports show officers responded to a call of a driver “swerving all over the road” and caught up to the vehicle on New Danville Pike in Pennsylvania’s Conestoga Township yesterday around 8 p.m. Police allege they found Lopez driving erratically, “at times going 15 miles per hour in a 45 MPH speed zone,” and pulled him over, Fox 43 reports.
The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office told PennLive a line of cars had formed behind Lopez’s vehicle, some with their hazard lights on.
“When officers stopped Lopez, they noticed empty beer cans on the floor of his vehicle and an odor of alcohol. Lopez initially told police his name was Bill Salgado,” according to Fox 43.
Police contend Lopez failed field sobriety tests and officers took him for a blood draw to test alcohol content at the hospital, where he confessed to staff that he consumed a six pack of Coronas.
The blood test results are still pending, PennLive reports.
Officials soon learned why Lopez allegedly provided a false name: he was previously charged with eight Driving Under the Influence offenses in Arizona between 2006 and 2010, and was deported from the country before moving to Greenridge Drive in Lancaster.
In addition to his ninth DUI charge, Lopez also faces charges of driving without a license, providing false identification to law enforcement, and other traffic offenses, Fox 43 reports.
Lopez was lodged without bail in York County Prison where he also awaits possible deportation proceedings, according to WHTM.
The Lancaster County District Attorney said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are now investigating Lopez’s case.
Lopez’s arrest illustrates comments Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump made in announcing his candidacy this summer that “when Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.
“They’re sending people that have a lot of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us,” Trump said, according to Real Clear Politics.
The case is only one of numerous incidents highlighted during the presidential campaign that show a clear pattern of deported illegal immigrant criminals returning to the U.S. to repeat their behavior.
“It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably … from the Middle East,” Trump said. “But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast.”
