Is it just old age or something he caught? Or something more?

Bill Clinton opened a speech in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Thursday by coughing and apologizing for his voice.

He coughed as he approached the lectern.

“You’ll have to forgive me I’m a little bit hoarse,” Clinton said before coughing again into the microphone. He proceeded to speak for over 40 minutes.

The former president then appeared in New Orleans, where video published by the Times-Picayune captured Clinton with a raspy voice and his hand quivering.

Clinton’s voice repeatedly cracked as he pitched his wife’s higher education proposal.

“She’s got a program so that anybody that goes to a public college or a historically black college and university or any other private college that deals with first- and second-generation immigrants and other low-income Americans that has a reasonably low tuition, everyone oughta be able to go to one of those schools and be able to graduate completely debt-free,” he said.

His hand shook as he pointed towards the audience.

“But, we shouldn’t forget, anybody who doesn’t want to do that,” he said with his voice breaking, “should have access to at least two years of high quality skill training so they can get a job that pays a good living,” his face wincing.
