Students at Elon University aren’t feeling the bern for Hillary Clinton.
Elon Local News reported only a “handful” of students turned out at the North Carolina school to watch a speech by Bill Clinton delivered via live stream.
“The Great Hall may not have been greatly filled earlier this afternoon to hear President Bill Clinton speak,” ELN reported Monday.
The news report, titled, “Students Gather to Behold Bill Clinton,” showed the “handful” of students — maybe five — reading books, looking at computers and staring at phones. They were doing just about anything but paying attention to Clinton’s speech.
Jon Dooley, dean of Campus Life, says the Clinton campaign contacted the law school and asked them to organize the live stream viewing.
“The university worked very quickly over the weekend to put this together because we know that these kinds of political events are important for our democracy and really a great way for students to hear directly from candidates and their campaigns,” Dooley said.
“I just figure any time you have an opportunity to see a former president speak, that’s a really good opportunity to take advantage of,” student Kyle Thomas told the news service.
“One of the goals we have as an institution,” Dooley said, “is for our students to be responsible global citizens and an important part of that is understanding our role as citizens.”
