During its coverage of the primary returns Saturday night, MSNBC interrupted Hillary Clinton’s victory speech to analyze her voice.
“Her speech is interesting,” host Lawrence O’Donnell said. “Chris (Matthews), you know one of the trickier things to teach people about public speaking is that the microphone works. You don’t have to actually yell,” he said as Matthews began laughing.
“And you can do conversational tones and she’s finding that more…” he said.
The two agreed there are two Hillary Clintons: the public one and the private one.
O’Donnell said she can be very “witty and very charming and that’s because there’s no microphone and it’s a conversational tone and it’s easy going.
“If she can find that on a stage, it will work much better for her than that more traditional, old-fashioned speech.”
Matthews insisted their critique had “nothing to do with gender. It’s technique, dammit, not personality or character.”
He said it’s “an old labor hall way of showing your zest and it doesn’t work on television.”
