What a difference eight years makes.
When Hillary Clinton was struggling against Barack Obama, she was all for debates.
Now that she’s trying to run the clock out against Bernie Sanders, she’ll get back to him on his proposed debate in New York before the April 19 primary.
“This is the most important job in the world,” Clinton said. “It’s the toughest job in the world. You should be willing to campaign for every vote. You should be willing to debate anytime, anywhere.”
In an appearance on Fox News in April 2008, Clinton went so far as to question the courage of her chief rival.
“I’ve accepted any and all debates (in Indiana and North Carolina) because most people really want to see us.”
She added, “I’m still hopeful because I think it’s a shame apparently he’s unwilling or afraid to debate me when there’s so much at stake and these two states deserve to have a debate.”
Now, eight years later, Clinton chief strategist Joel Benenson tells CNN they’ll debate Sanders again, if he improves his “tone.”
“We agreed to debates up to a certain point, we’re now out campaigning in these states.”
“What’s the risk?” Benenson was asked.
“There’s no risk,” he responded. “She’s done very well in the debates, the debates have been very good but Sen. Sanders doesn’t get to decide when we debate.”
