Bill Clinton delivered the line with such sincerity — one two separate days — it just had to be true.
But no, the rapidly aging former president was just confused.
“So I appointed Judge Garland,” Clinton told an audience in Los Angeles on Sunday. “And he was confirmed 97 to nothing. Ninety-seven to nothing.”
He said a similar declaration in Milwaukee on Monday.
“I thought President Obama was pretty smart to appoint Judge Garland because I put him on the Court of Appeals. He was confirmed by 97 to zero,” Clinton said emphatically.
Except, Clinton has his judges mixed up.
The roll call vote for Garland’s confirmation on March 19, 1997 shows he received 76 “yeas” and 23 “nays.”
The judge confirmed 97 to zero was actually Sri Srinivasan, another Appeals Court judge rumored to have been under consideration by Obama.
