While trying to zing Bernie Sanders for not “holding up well under the scrutiny,” Hillary Clinton’s top strategist swapped names with the man his candidate dare not say anything negative about, with a one-time most hunted terrorist.

Joel Benenson, senior strategist for the Clinton campaign, appeared on MSNBC on Monday and committed what may be one of the gravest faux pas in Democratic politics today.

“When it comes to the question of judgement, let’s be clear: Hillary Clinton ran a spirited campaign against then-Sen. Obama, and at the end of that campaign, he made a decision about her judgement and trusted her to put her in as secretary of state overseeing American diplomacy and relations around the world.

“He listened to her in the Situation Room time after time, including around decisions about whether or not to go after Barack Obama,” Benenson said.

He likely was actually referring to terrorist Osama bin Laden, not Barack Obama. Clinton has made it a point in her stump speech to say she helped Obama get bin Laden.

“I think it’s unfortunate Sen. Sanders is not holding up well under the scrutiny and the rigor the New York press corps. is applying to him here. It would be better for him, I think, so stay on the issues, but we’re happy to have debates about who’s got the judgement and the wherewithal to be commander-in-chief and make America safe, and improve our economy in a way that will make a real difference in people’s lives.”
