The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation waded into political territory recently when a panelist slammed Republican front runner Donald Trump — during a forum moderated by the foundation’s namesake.
Bill Clinton was moderating a panel titled, “The Courage to Create,” at a Clinton Global Initiative University meeting in Berkeley, California earlier this month.
Panelist Cady Coleman, a NASA astronaut, told the audience, “It’s part of the reason I’m here tonight. We’re recruiting. We’re absolutely going to Mars. I can look at every single one of you and tell you that that is going to happen.”
Fellow panelist Wael Ghonim, one of the leading voices in the Arab Spring — which saw the overthrow of Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak and an increased destabilization of the Middle East — interrupted her.
“I have to interrupt you and say if Trump wins, I’m definitely going to Mars,” he said to cheers from the audience.
“I’m actually half joking,” he added.
After a long pause, Bill Clinton said, “I don’t know what to say. I’m overwhelmed.”
Foundations are forbidden by IRS regulations from engaging in politics. But if Obama’s administration won’t prosecute a Clinton for potentially compromising state secrets through an unsecured email, it’s unlikely to do anything about anything like this.
