The so-called “Beef Bandit” of Upshur County is behind bars after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase through multiple East Texas counties, officials said.

mooreEast Mountain police told KLTV that 54-year-old Ozima Moore Jr. stole numerous packages of steaks from a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Longview around 11 a.m. Wednesday before fleeing the store.

Police reportedly caught up to Moore shortly after and attempted to stop the man’s vehicle but he sped off, leading officers on a chase through Gregg and Harrison counties at over 100 mph as he tossed the meat from the vehicle, East Mountain patrol Sgt. Marcus Nichols said.

Nichols said local authorities alerted East Mountain police about the suspect, and he intercepted the Moore’s vehicle as he was tossing his stash.

“They had actually terminated their end of the pursuit, they gave out information of the suspect and what vehicle he was driving, and that he may be coming through our area,” Nichols told KLTV. “He went from here in East Mountain all the way to Gladewater, and we reached speeds up to 100 mph.”

“It appears that there’s steaks and meats of some sort coming out the windows, and you could actually hear one of them bounce off my patrol car,” Nichols told the news site. “That’s not something you normally hear of people stealing, especially running from the police in that process, so it was definitely a new one for me.”

Nichols said that once the vehicle stopped on Highway 271, he drew his pistol and Moore surrendered without a fight.

“There’s always the unknown,” he said. “As he comes up on traffic, their reactions, we have no idea how to adjust for that until it happens.

The news site later learned that Moore’s two outstanding warrants likely played a role in the attempted getaway.

He’s currently booked into Upshur County Jail on charges of evading police, according to the news site

The “beef bandit” is currently held on a $35,000 bond.
