South Carolina tow truck driver Kenneth Shupe is done doing business with socialists.
Shupe told WLOS he been “Berned” by two supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in recent months.
So when he realized that stranded motorist Cassy McWade supported the socialist candidate, Shupe opted to leave her with her car along Interstate 26 in Ashville Monday.
“Something came over me, I think the Lord came to me, and he just said get in the truck and leave,” said Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina. “And when I got in my truck, you know, I was so proud, because I felt like I finally drew a line in the sand and stood up for what I believed.”
McWade was reportedly in an accident and her car was immobile about 45 minutes north of Traveler’s Rest so she called her regular mechanic, who was too busy to pick her up. She then called Shupe, who responded to the scene and noticed a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker and yard sign in her back window.
“He goes around back and comes back and says ‘I can’t tow you.’ My first instinct was there must be something wrong with the car,” McWade told the news site. “And he says, ‘No, you’re a Bernie Sanders supporter.’ And I was like wait, really? And he says, ‘Yes ma’am,’ and just walks away.”
Shupe, a Christian who supports presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, said he has good reason for denying McWade his services.
“Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have got gotten paid,” he told Fox Carolina. “Every time I deal with these people I get ‘Berned’ with an ‘e’ not a ‘u.’”
He reportedly told her to “call the government” for help.
Shupe elaborated further for WLOS.
“I’ve had some horrible experiences in the last six months with towing cars for this mindset of individuals, in that I don’t get paid. They want to argue about a $50 tow bill, and it turns into just a drama and a fuss,” he said. “And I said, you know, I’m not going to associate with them, and I’m not going to do any business with them.”
McWade waited along the roadside for another hour and a half before another tow truck arrived, and claims the experience was “terrifying” because the 25-year-old is handicapped with psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and early-stage Crohns, WLOS reports.
The situation infuriated McWade’s mother, Kelle McWade, who ranted about the ordeal on Facebook.
“Heads up, friends…. Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn’t tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY,” Kelle McWade wrote.
“Spread this bigot’s story far & wide. Btw, I’m guessing he’s a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals’ money spends just the same as anyone else’s. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).”
Fox Carolina contacted Greenville attorney Steve Sumner, who contends Shupe did not break any laws because political affiliation is not a protected class.
“We may not like it and we may not agree with it, but I don’t believe any laws were broken,” he said. “As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up.”
Shupe told WLOS he did not know McWade was handicapped, but it wouldn’t have made a difference. Had he known, he still wouldn’t have towed her car, he said.
“I would have pulled forward and sat there with her to make sure she was OK until another wrecker service showed up to get her home safely, but I still would not have towed her car,” he said. “I stand by my decision, and I would do it again today if the opportunity presented itself.”
