A recent video posted to YouTube highlights the aggressive tactics used by Merced, California police to tackle some of the area’s most pressing crime issues, like the bad guys who their bicycles on the sidewalk.

The nearly 3-minute video posted by morigator2011 shows an interaction between Merced police that appears to start with a female Hispanic officer attempting to cite a young black man for allegedly riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.

When the man refuses to provide identification, the officer calls for backup and things quickly turn ugly.

“Give me your ID, so I can cite you,” the Hispanic officer tells the young black man, who was sitting on his bicycle on the sidewalk outside of a store.

“I am not finning to give you my ID because I did not do anything wrong,” the man responded. “You’re finnin to arrest me for riding on the sidewalk?”

“Officer Martinez, Merced Police,” the person recording the video states as his friend and the officer continued to argue. The officer also called for backup.

“Give me your ID,” the officer demanded again.

“I don’t have to give you nothing,” the bicyclist countered.

“Yes you do,” the officer responded.

“No, I don’t,” the man said.

“Why? What law says that?” he questioned.

The man repeatedly attempted to ride away, but the officer blocked his path.

“You need to give me your ID!” the woman officer demanded, before she grabbing the black man by his arm and pushed him off the bike.

The man didn’t resist, but repeatedly asked the officer: “Why are you touching me?”

“Don’t touch me,” he said, and the officer briefly relented before going after him again, appearing to attempt to handcuff the man while shouting “Give me your ID now!”

“No, I’m not giving you nothing,” the man said as he attempted to pick up his bicycle.

“Give me your ID now!” the female officer continued.

The black man complied with the officer’s attempt to handcuff him, and as soon as he did a male officer rushed in and grabbed the man by the neck and slammed him into a doorway. The male officer wore a helmet, and shouted in the teens face to “turn around” as he physically prevented him from doing so.

“Do you hear her talking to you?” the male officer yelled.

“I didn’t do anything to you!” the black man countered.

“This is what they do to black people, bra,” he shouted to the camera man. “You see what they do?”

The camera man can be heard repeatedly stating “Merced police” and informing the officer that he’s filming the encounter.

The two officers continued to pin the black man against the building until he was handcuffed, then the male officer attempted to sit the man on the sidewalk, eventually kicking the man’s feet out from under him when he didn’t immediately comply.

“I don’t want to argue with you but, did you see what happened?” the camera man can be heard asking someone off camera, presumably a third officer.

“Ya, I know exactly what happened,” the other person replied. “He was refusing to abide by the officer’s request.”

“The officer’s request for what?” the cameraman questioned.

“The officer’s request for his ID,” the man replied.

The cameraman then began to state the different officers’ names for the record.

“Officer Jake Gonzalez, Merced Police,” he said.

“Back up!” an officer ordered the camera man.

“Yes sir, yes sir,” the cameraman replied, before someone appears to knock the camera from his grasp.

“Whoa, what the …”

The YouTube video included a caption explaining the fallout from the incident.

“Merced Police give citation for man riding his bike on the sidewalk. Then kicked while handcuffed, followed by @Officialbrycealan being tackled after listening to the officer. Resulting in misdamenior for the recorder. The indiviual in this video was charged a felony and two misdaminiors, the film recorder of this video was also charged with a misdaminior for resisting, delaying, or disrupting a public officer. (sic),” it read.

The post also included Instagram handles for those involved in the incident, and the blog “Photography is not a crime” attempted to track them down.

“Judging by the Instagram usernames left in the description, the videographer is named Bryce Alan and the man on the bike is Marquez Harris …,” according to the site. “Alan is being charged with Penal Code 148, which is California’s contempt of cop law, which alleges that he was resisting, delaying, or disrupting a public officer.

“That charge is more appropriate for the guy on the bicycle, who received two misdemeanors and one felony charge, which means they are probably accusing him of assaulting the officer, but that does not appear to be the case.”
