Having second thoughts?
After accusations of being in the bag for Hillary Clinton for months, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is now refusing to call her the “presumptive nominee.”
During an appearance on “Meet the Press” on Tuesday, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee twice refused to give her that title.
“Today is the last day of the primary and polls have not closed, so we are not presuming anything,” Wasserman Schultz said when asked by Chuck Todd if the party considered Clinton the “presumptive nominee.”
After claiming the party is working with Clinton on fundraising, Wasserman Schultz was pressed again on the question.
“But she is not the presumptive nominee as far as the DNC is concerned?” Todd asked.
“We are certainly not going to declare anyone the presumptive nominee before the last votes are cast, which will be today,” Wasserman Schultz said.
Clinton will not receive enough pledged delegates to win the Democratic nomination outright. She will need to rely on super delegates.
According to the AP, Clinton has 2,219 pledged delegates — short of the 2,383 needed to win the nomination.
But with the super delegates factored in, Clinton reportedly has 2,800 votes at the convention.
