Pennsylvania state Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown claims she wants to teach the next generation about right and wrong, so she tore down a Confederate flag that was part of a display inside the Harrisburg Capitol.

pa-confederate-flag“That flag represents hatred, murder, and oppression,” she declared after removing the 1863 “Confederate States of America Army of Tennessee Battle Flag” without permission Wednesday, WGAL reports. “It was important for me to take a stand to make sure the next generation of children are not taught hatred is okay.”

The flag had been on display in the East Rotunda of the capitol building as part of the “Clausen Historic Flag Collection,” alongside other flags including “George Washington’s Commander’s Flag,” “Bunker Hill Flag,” “First Stars and Stripes Flag,” and numerous others for about the last three weeks, according to the news site.

The Hanover Area Historical Society that put up the display May 29 was not impressed by Brown’s antics, which spokeswoman Deborah Markle said equated to theft.

“It was stolen,” Markle said. “She had no right to put her hands on that collection.”

Brown claims she handed the flag over to House Speaker Mark Turzai.

Police eventually got involved and put the flag back on display, but Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, later rewarded Brown’s outrageous behavior by ordering the Confederate State of America Army of Tennessee Battle Flag removed permanently, according to WLTZ.

Brown only removed the Confederate States of America Army of Tennessee Battle Flag, but others representing the Confederacy that were also on display, and Wolf ordered those flags removed, as well.

“It’s part of American history,” Debra Markle, a member of the historical society’s board, told PennLive. “We can’t sugarcoat everything and it’s just a shame that one person’s opinion has to ruin [the display] for so many. But it seems that’s the way it’s going in this country.”

The governor, apparently, disagrees.

“The governor believes the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism and hatred that has no place in this building or any state building,” Wolf spokesman Jeff Sheridan said. “Pennsylvania wasn’t part of the Confederacy, so I’m not sure why that would be a symbol of a historical display in our building here in the Capitol.

“It should never have been in here in the first place,” he said.

Regardless, Markle believes Brown’s antics send the wrong message, and she should face consequences for her actions.

“That woman was a thief,” Markle said. “She took that flag when no one was looking. She stole the flag, she is a thief and she didn’t have enough honor and credibility to return it.”
