After watching cell phone video of a red biplane plane crashing into a Texas lake, it’s a miracle anyone made it out alive.

“We heard the prop die and suddenly they hit the water, flipped and began sinking. It was SO surreal,” a witness of the Saturday afternoon Lake Travis crash posted on Instagram.

“Everyone began boating, jet-skiing, sailing, kayaking towards them. Sean even jumped off the dock and began swimming towards them!”

Witnesses say the plane was completely submerged in less than one minute and the three occupants made it out alive.

According to Instagram user “jmotexas,” “It was a man taking his Dad on a birthday plane ride excursion over Lake Travis. The Dad told me he’s been fighting cancer and the son told me he and his wife just had a new baby 3 weeks ago.”

KXAN reports the accident occurred around 4 p.m.

“People were just in shock, we just couldn’t believe what we were watching,” witness Geoff Grunska says.

“We were trying to figure out what he was doing, then we realized the engine cut out and we were like ‘Oh this is not going to end well.’”

Emergency personnel say there were only minor injuries. One passenger was treated at the scene but was not taken to the hospital.

The plane’s location was marked with a black buoy and it will remain submerged until the owner’s insurance company pays to have it retrieved.
