When British-American actress and Dancing with the Stars flunky Mischa Barton reflects on the world’s troubles, she apparently likes to do it with a nice glass of white wine, salt water whipping through her hair aboard a yacht on the French Riviera.
“I’m truly heart broken to watch videos like the #altonsterling execution. This may have been going on forever in the United States but thank god the pigs get caught on camera now,” Barton posted to Instagram with a picture of herself leaning on the stern rail of a mega yacht, eyes closed in contemplation.
“Its unthinkable and an embarrassment to America. The country I was brought up in,” she continued in the Thursday post. “Somebody make change. We need gun control and unity. And a real President so thing about that when this election is around the corner. The world is a precarious place right now. #stop #reflect and #act appropriately.”
The post is in reference to the police shooting of 37-year-old Baton Rouge, Louisiana resident Alton Sterling in an incident that was recorded by several bystanders. The Justice Department announced Wednesday that it’s investigating what happened, WAFB reports.
The case has raised tensions between Black Lives Matter activists and a growing Blue Lives Matter movement to support police involved in violent altercations, but both groups were united in their condemnation of Barton’s comments, according to the Daily Mail.
Her Instagram account was flooded with critics and her missive generated ruthless headlines across the globe, including “Mischa Barton Memorializes Alton Sterling With Bikini Yacht Pic,” and “Mischa Barton’s police brutality photo is the most offensive ever.”
“#Blessed that Mischa Barton has weighed in on #AltonSterling. Truly the nuanced yacht-based analysis we needed,” Arwa Mahdawi posted to Twitter.
“Dear celebs, it’s great that you have a platform to speak up and be heard,” Gerrick D. Kennedy added, “But THIS is not what’s needed right now.”
“Let us all take a moment to thank Mischa Barton for taking a moment out of her yachting and day drinking schedule to deliver that word,” Schuyler Cousin wrote.
Adam Johnson posted that “Mischa Barton chiming in on racism while on a yacht is the most 2016 thing of 2016.”
Paper Mag was even more brutal, describing Barton’s pic as “a still from a Hallmark channel sequel to Eat Pray Love the fledging actress would be lucky to star in these days.”
“A glass of rose in hand, leaning against the railing on the end of a yacht, cutting through the impossibly blue waters of the French Riviera, Mischa reflects,” the magazine’s Carey O’Donnell wrote.
“On racism, gun control, murder, and American unity: Misha reflects. ‘The world is a precarious place right now … ‘ She thinks, the salty air whipping against her fair skin. P-R-E-C-A-R-I-O-U-S,” O’Donnell continued. “I only wish I was on that boat so I could throw myself overboard.”
Barton ultimately deleted the insensitive Instagram post about three hours after she posted it, according to the Daily Mail, which captured the post and re-published it.
