A Mexican television journalist is out of work after a picture of her being carried by flood victims in Puebla to protect her expensive shoes circulated online and created an outrage.
TV Azteca reporter Lydia Cumming was on scene to document severe flooding in Puebla on Friday and the 24-year-old apparently couldn’t refuse an offer by locals to carry her over puddles to avoid getting her fancy shoes wet, Metro reports.
“I should have been quicker to refuse the kindness of the people who only tried to help me,” Cumming told Mexican newspaper El Pais, according to Metro. “I try to maintain a good relationship with people and I was afraid I would sound rude if I turned down the favor.
“They carried me for two seconds and after I asked them to put me down,” she said.
But two seconds was all it took for her colleague to snap a picture, and for Cumming to lose her job.
Cumming said the image was shared on her personal Facebook page, but it was also later posted to Twitter by journalist Jose Daniel Hernandez, according to BuzzFeed.
Hernandez labeled Cumming’s conduct “shameful,” and she fired back on Twitter with a message “Only publishing for the sake of publishing without context.”
Almost immediately after, Cumming became a Twitter celebrity with the hashtag #LadyReportera. The image of her riding atop her Puebla neighbors inspired countless memes mocking her antics with hilarious references to “Star Wars,” “Game of Thrones,” “Titanic,” the moon landing and other ridiculousness, the Kansas City Star reports.
“Somebody give #LadyReportera a Pulitzer,” Deku tweeted with a collage of several memes of Cumming being carried by soldiers, through a marathon, and other silly scenes.

“Small step for man, giant leap for #LadyReportera,” Papa Olvidado posted with a doctored image of Cumming being carried by the flood victims across a rocky moonscape.

The reporter’s boss, TV Azteca Puebla’s Juan Carols Valerio, didn’t seem to see the humor in Cumming’s conduct, and announced her termination via Twitter.
In Spanish, Valerio wrote “she was fired yesterday. I’m sorry for what happened. Her attitude is regrettable and for this we sacked her,” according to Metro.
The television station issued an official statement on Twitter Wednesday that contends the company “does not penalize the dissemination of the images but the lack of respect shown towards neighbors who were part of the reporter’s coverage,” BuzzFeed reports.
“For this reason, Lydia Cumming is not longer part of this home,” the station wrote. “TV Azteca collaborators are obligated to respect all people and the code of conduct that is part of our company.”
Cumming also issued a video statement about the ordeal, minutes after the TV Azteca Twitter post, in which the reporter took full responsibility for her actions.
“I admit my mistakes,” she said. “The photos show a lack of professionalism and tact.”
Regardless, Cumming told El Paris she has no plans to toss in the towel on her journalism career.
“I love this profession,” she told the news site, according to BuzzFeed. “I’ve covered various floods in which I’ve gotten wet and it has never mattered to me. After all this has quieted down a little, I will continue to look for opportunities.”
Cumming also said she learned a lesson, according to the Telegraph.
“[Social media] can work in your favour or against you … I must be more careful and be more aware of what is shared in my network,” she said.
