Members of the South Carolina Secessionist Party restrained a man at a downtown Charleston park Saturday and held him until police arrived after he allegedly assaulted two members in an attempt to snatch away the group’s Confederate flags.BenChase

Police responded to The Battery, near Murray Boulevard and East Battery Street, around 10 a.m. Saturday to find two members of the Secessionist Party hold a man against a railing at the park, as well as a fourth man who witnessed an altercation between the group minutes earlier, The Post and Courier reports.

The two party members, James Bessenger and Matthew Locke, and the witness, Geoffrey Burke, told police that a man later identified as Benjamin Chase, 30, approached the group while they were peacefully flying Confederate flags at the popular park.

Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis told the news site that Chase expressed opposition to the Confederate flags before he attempted unsuccessfully to grab Locke’s flag. Chase then snatched Bessenger’s flag and broke the aluminum pole it was attached to before physically attacking the men, according to the news site.

“A physical struggle then ensued between Mr. Chase and the victims,” Francis wrote in an email. “During the physical altercation, Mr. Chase grabbed Mr. Locke by the throat with his hands and Mr. Bessenger was struck by Mr. Chase while retrieving his flag.”

The South Carolina Secessionist Party wrote about the ordeal, and posted a video of Chase’s arrest, on Facebook.

“After attempting to snatch one flag, breaking a flag pole, assaulting Party members and trying to choke a supporter, a man is carried off to jail. After the assault, Party members and supporters performed a citizens arrest, detaining the man until police could arrive,” the post read.

“Another big THANK YOU to Charleston’s Finest for taking immediate action against this criminal. The police once again explained to this man that The South Carolina Secessionist Party conducts a peaceful flagging of the Battery every weekend and that we have the constitutional right to do so,” it continued. “Charleston Police deserve the gratitude of the Southern People for standing up without hesitation or question, AGAIN, for the right to defend our Southern heritage.”

The group also blamed Gov. Nikki Haley for such incidents.

“The blame for this type of environment existing and these types of actions taking place rests solely at the feet of the Adulterous Traitor in the South Carolina Governors Manson, Nimrata Randhawa Hailey,” the post read.

“These types of incidents have become all too common across the Southland of America. We strongly encourage anyone who is a victim of this type of behavior to press charges to the fullest extent of the law. It’s high time people were held accountable for their actions,” it continued.

“It’s worth (noting) that the flagging continued on as scheduled as the would-be social warrior sat in the back of a police car with a front row seat.”

WCIV reports Chase was charged with two counts of simple assault, as well as damage to personal property.

It was at least the second such incident in the last two months, according to the site.

“A similar incident happened in June in the same area. In that incident, police say a 22-year-old woman’s emotions over the Confederate flag landed her and her father in custody. Lyndia Marsha Folckomer, of Brooklyn, New York, was charged with removal destruction of private property,” WCIV reports.

“Her father, 50-year-old Paul Folckomer, of Brevard, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with simple assault.”
