BEACH HAVEN, N.J. – A former mayoral candidate in Beach Haven, New Jersey was arrested after beach-goers said his custom bikini left them disturbed.
“On September 26, 2016, Beach Haven Police Det. Joseph Boehler arrested Stephen Wojciehowski, 59, of Cedar Run for the alleged act of Lewdness on the Ocean Street Beach,” according to an announcement on the department’s Facebook page.
“The investigation and subsequent arrest were initiated on Wednesday based upon information provided by several eye witnesses. Based on the reported information, Stephen Wojciehowski spent two days on the beach, wearing a homemade, clear plastic wrap bikini, where his genitals were clearly exposed and observed by the public, on a public beach.”
Wojciehowski was later released pending further court proceedings, according to NJ.com.
The Asbury Park Press reports Wojciehowski ran for mayor of Stafford in 2000 and garnered 12 percent of the vote in a three way race, but ultimately lost the election.
Beach Haven Police Lt. James Markoski told Philly.com that witnesses said Wojciehowski “would walk up wearing normal clothes and take his shorts off.”
“He was sunning himself,” Markoski said. “He wanted to get sun on that part.”
The news site pointed out that New Jersey does have a nude beach – Gunnison Beach – at the north end of Sandy Hook, which is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, where local ordinances do not apply.
Wojeichowski’s arrest, of course, prompted some interesting comments online.
“Ok, ok people, it’s over nothing to see here, that’s a wrap,” Dominick Santore joked on Facebook.
“OMG, I wait on him all the time!” Stephanie Grayson posted. “Wow.”
“I hear he’s single and looking,” James Duffy Jr. added. “Likes poetry, long walks and just hanging …”
“Plastic wrap keeps his meat fresh,” Jim Reilly wrote.
“Reminds me of the book Cellophane Bikini by Seymore Hare,” Joe Althouse posted.
