Millions of Californians believe they would find a safe space from Donald Trump’s America by seeking independence or linking up with Mexico.
A new poll finds 23% of Golden State residents support seceding from the United States of America and a majority hold incredibly harsh views of Trump voters.
The statewide poll, conducted by Survey USA for KPIX and released on Wednesday, finds 57% of Californians oppose secession, while 20% are “not sure.”
A “Calexit” movement has taken hold since Trumps’ victory last week, Business Insider reports:
A fringe political group in California wants to opt out of a Donald Trump presidency by leaving the union.
The Yes California Independence Campaign aims to hold a referendum in 2018 that, if passed, would bring California one step closer to becoming an independent country.
Far-fetched as it may sound, the plan started gathering steam after Tuesday night’s surprising presidential vote. The movement has an impressive backer in Shervin Pishevar, a well-known angel investor who offered to bankroll a campaign to secede.
Meanwhile, those same respondents hold dim views of Trump’s supporters.
Of those surveyed, 40% believe Trump voters are “bad people,” while 29% say they’re “good people.”
A majority — 55% — believe Trump supporters are “racist”, while 49% say they’re “sexist.”
Fifty-eight percent of respondents say Trump is biased against LGBT Americans, while 52% believe he thinks less of women than he does of men.
Of the Californians surveyed, 40% have already decided that Trump will be one of America’s “worst” presidents.
Interestingly, a plurality — 42% — say the economy will grow stronger under a Trump presidency.
