An 88-year-old woman in LaPorte County, Indiana told police she was robbed by two men who stopped by her house Sunday and offered to clear snow from her driveway.
The elderly woman told the LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputies the two men talked their way into her home on Red Oak Drive in Trail Creek Sunday afternoon by complaining of being cold, and offering to clear her driveway of snow and spread salt, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
“While one suspect distracted the woman, the second made his way to the bedroom and stole a jewelry box and silver coins,” WSBT reports.
The woman was not injured, but she called a relative about the incident. The relative alerted the police.
“The suspects were described as younger white males, one being 5’8” and the other being shorter,” according to WIMS radio. “The suspects were driving a white truck with a silver tool box in the bed of the truck. They left the area in an unknown direction of travel.”
The incident is one of numerous recent attacks on the elderly heading into the holiday season.
Police told the Chicago Tribune that a mugger beat a 94-year-old Navy veteran as she waited outside her Southwest Side home for her daughter to take her to a doctor’s appointment last Wednesday. The suspect punched World War II veteran Josephine Regnier, grabbed her purse containing $50, and sped off in an SUV.
Police contend the mugger crashed the SUV up the street from the attack then fled on foot, according to the news site.
“He broke a couple of ribs, gave her a black eye, there’s a big goose egg on her head. She had a cut, a sore by her mouth,” Regnier’s daughter, Judy Dusk, told WGN-TV. “She’s pretty shaken up.”
Police later identified the culprit as 25-year-old OIlajuwon Claiborne, who is also wanted for two other robberies and an aggravated battery, DNAinfo reports.
The week before the Chicago assault, two men posing as delivery workers talked their way into an elderly couple’s home in Berkeley Township, New Jersey. Once inside, the men allegedly ordered the couple by gunpoint into separate rooms and stole their valuables, then fled from the Silver Ridge home in a dark colored sedan, the Asbury Park Press reports.
The elderly couple was not injured in that incident.
In another brazen attack in Thomasville, Georgia, police arrested Shanequa Richardson, 24, and 25-year-old Malcolm Bryant for repeatedly attacking and robbing a 78-year-old man who lived alone in a secluded home, according to the Times Enterprise.
“They did not know this guy. His house is secluded on Marshall Street, They decided to take advantage of them,” Thomasville Police Capt. Maurice Holmes said.
The man told police he was attacked and robbed by the couple on Oct. 18, again on Nov. 30, and a third time on Dec. 1.
“During the October assault, his assailants stole $300 in cash and his wallet from him,” Holmes said.
