Will electors actually defect from Hillary Clinton and vote for another candidate? And even a Republican?

Washington elector Bret Chiafalo, who was elected to vote for Clinton, tells KING5’s Natalie Brand he’s “99% chance” he will vote for John Kasich when it comes his time to cast a ballot.

“He is qualified, experienced and most of the Republican electors I’ve talked to who have grave concerns about Donald Trump would prefer him as president.”

Chiafalo says he’s doing what he’s asking them to do, “which is put country before party.

“I don’t think it would be fair for me to do any different.”

UPDATE:

PIX11 reports three other Clinton electors joined Chiafalo and voted for another candidate.

It’s the first time in four decades that the state’s electors have rebuffed the popular vote and voted for other candidates.

The Los Angeles Times adds that Chiafalo changed his declared intention from Kasich to Colin Powell.

Another elector voted for “Faith Spotted Eagle,” a Native American environmentalist. The remaining two “other” ballots weren’t disclosed.

Meanwhile, several states have already held their votes and so far, nothing has gone awry for Trump.
