Liberal reporters who apparently don’t know the Christmas story took issue with the RNC’s statement about Christmas.
Glenn Thrush, currently with Politico and recently hired by the New York Times to cover the Trump White House, brought attention to a statement by the Republican National Committee on the birth of Jesus:
.@Reince: 'Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King' #KEOTUS
— Glenn Thrush (@GlennThrush) December 25, 2016
Thrush quoted Reince Priebus referring to a “new King,” and included the hashtag “#KEOTUS,” apparently meaning “King-elect of the United States.”
The RNC issued a statement on Sunday quoting Priebus:
Merry Christmas to all! Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King. We hope Americans celebrating Christmas today will enjoy a day of festivities and a renewed closeness with family and friends.
But the story refers, of course, to Jesus being the “new King” and effectively replacing earthly rulers like King Herod.
As About Bible Prophecy reports:
The Star of Bethlehem attracted visitors from the East. These visitors believed that the star marked the birth of a new king. Perhaps the visitors were familiar with the Bible’s prophecies and understood that a Messiah King would be born in Israel and that he would have an impact on the entire world.
But, Israel already had a ruler, King Herod the Great. He was not a true king but had been appointed by the Romans to govern the Jews in the land of Israel. Herod was described by Josephus, a Jewish historian who lived during the first century, as a murderous man who ordered the deaths of many of his own family members. When Herod found out that the visitors were hoping to find and worship the newborn king, Herod ordered the deaths of every infant in Bethlehem, in the hopes of killing the king that the visitors spoke of.
So Thrush pulled off something truly remarkable: He both displayed his ignorance for the history of Christmas, and exposed his hair-trigger contempt for Trump and the RNC all in less than 140 characters.
