A mother whose son was killed by an illegal immigrant is putting the issue into proper perspective for social justice activists bemoaning the “tough day” for immigrants Wednesday.

Laura Wilkerson stood beside President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. Wednesday as he signed executive orders to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, strip federal money from “sanctuary” cities and states that harbor illegal immigrants, and increase the number of immigration agents, Reuters reports.

Afterwards, Wilkerson, whose son was killed by an illegal immigrant as a high school senior, participated in a panel discussion on Fox News Wednesday alongside self-proclaimed activist and illegal immigrant Jose Antonio Vargas, who told viewers that immigrants had a “tough day” Wednesday.

Vargas defended those who come to the United States illegally, claiming “the vast majority of us are not murderers and rapists and killers.” He also pointed the finger at businesses that employ illegal immigrants as part of the problem.

But Wilkerson, chairwoman of the advocacy group Enforce the Law, said many Americans simply want the federal government to enforce the laws that already exist, and explained in real terms what it means when it doesn’t.

“You say you’ve had a tough day,” Wilkerson shot back. “I don’t know if you understand what a tough day is in the life of a parent who’s lost a child at the hands of an illegal in this country. …

“You’re legal or illegal, it’s one way or the other. There is no gray area on that. You’ve had plenty of time in this country to get in line, come in the front door. Your parents brought you here undocumented … but you have had plenty of time to get in line and we don’t have to make any excuses for that.”

Vargas attempted to argue that “this is not black and white … millions of people live in the gray area every day,” but Wilkerson wasn’t having it.

“You live in the country illegally, and that’s it,” she said. “There’s no gray area.”

President Trump, of course, sides with Wilkerson.

“Beginning today, the United States of America gets back control of its borders,” Trump tweeted Wednesday, along with a video from his speech to the Department of Homeland Security.

“This is a law enforcement agency,” Trump said. “For too long, your officers had agents haven’t been allowed to properly do their jobs. … But that’s all about to change. …

“From here on out, I’m asking all of you to enforce the laws of the United States of America. They will be enforced and enforced strongly,” he continued. “We are going to restore the rule of law in the United States.”
