It appears one of the hand-me-downs from Barack Obama to Tom Perez was the president’s map of America.
As Perez was accepting the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee over the weekend, he told party members he wants to help build “57 state parties.”
Speaking about the other candidates, Perez said, “I frankly found myself when I got into this race going to their website because I was learning a lot.
“Sally (Boyton Brown) and I have had lunch a number of times talking about our shared interest in building 57 state parties that work.”
He made no correction or qualification, before moving on to talking about a late-night drink he had in the bar with another candidate.
Fifty-seven is the exact number of states Barack Obama said he visited while he was campaigning in 2008.
“It is wonderful to be back in Oregon,” he told a crowd. “Over the last 15 months we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States.
“I’ve now been in 57 states?” Obama said, seemingly attempting to recollect his travels. “I think one left to go.”
