A 3-year-old Chicago boy is in critical condition after police say he was shot in the head while playing “cops and robbers” at home.

ABC 7 reports:

Police said three young children were home alone at the time of the shooting and three guns were recovered as well as a large quantity of drugs. Police also said the children were there in “extremely poor living conditions” and were playing a game of cops and robbers when the gun went off.

The boy underwent surgery at Comer Children’s Hospital on Thursday.

“At this time, nothing points to any random street violence being involved, or any gang involvement,” Chicago Police Commander Kevin Johnson says.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi called the incident “a travesty.”

Anti-gun activist Andrew Holmes was on the scene with the family.

“Guns don’t belong in the house with children, and if they are in the house, they’re supposed to have safety locks on them,” he said according to CBS 2.

“So whether or not, whose gun it is, it’s up to the Chicago Police Department to trace that gun, but I wish that gun had never been inside that home in the first place,” he said.
