The Democrat-led Illinois House of Representatives is suddenly concerned about run-away spending, and that’s costing Barack Obama a day.

In February, Rep. André Thapedi introduced House Bill 231, which would establish August 4, Barack Obama’s Birthday, as a state holiday.

The bill designates it as “a day on which to hold appropriate exercises in commemoration of our illustrious President.”

Thapedi’s bill would establish the day as a paid holiday for government employees.

When Thapedi introduced his bill last month, he said other states honor other presidents, and Illinois should be no different.

“I thought those distinctions meant he should be honored — he’s basically an Illinoisan,” he said, according to DNA info.

Thapedi acknowledged the $3.2 million price tag to close government offices and give employees another day off would be expensive.

“Recognizing fiscal constraints we’re under now, it would not be unreasonable to take those things into consideration,” Thapedi said then.

Apparently a majority of his colleagues agreed.

When the “Obama Day” bill came up for a vote on Tuesday, it was rejected.

“Legislation to make the 44th president’s Aug. 4 birthday a state holiday fell six votes short of approval Tuesday,” WMBD reports.

Republican floor leader Steven Anderson recommended the day be “honorary,” where government offices wouldn’t close.

“I’m not sure even (Obama) would want us spending money we don’t have,” Anderson said.

Proponents used a procedure to allow the bill to be considered again at a later date.

Even then, Illinois’ debt will likely be higher than its current level of $153 BILLION today, according to USDebtClock.org.
