The White House Correspondents’ Association tapped an obscure comedian who dubbed President Trump the “white ISIS” to headline its upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” sidekick Hasan Minhaj is slated to entertain the White House press corps at the annual dinner on April 29, a clear sign that the president’s disdain for the media runs both ways.

“I am thrilled that Hasan will serve as our featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” WHCA president and Reuters reporter Jeff Mason announced in a statement posted to Twitter.

“Hasan’s smarts, big heart and passion for press freedom make him the perfect fit for our event, which will be focused on the First Amendment and the importance of a robust and independent media.”

Minhaj is perhaps best known for mocking President Trump as “white ISIS” during the presidential campaign.

“One third of a major political party in America is backing a racist maniac,” he told Noah in a December 2015 segment on Trump’s proposed travel ban.

“Maybe Trump never actually wanted to be president, so now he’s just self-sabotaging trying to get his supporters to break up with him by crossing the line again, and again, and again,” he said. “But I have a second theory, and I think this is where the evidence points.

“Donald Trump is an extremist leader who came out of nowhere. He’s self-financed, recruits through social media, attracts his followers with a radical ideology to take over the world, and is actively trying to promote a war between Islam and the west,” Minhaj said.

“Oh my God, Hasan, he’s white ISIS,” Noah said.

“That’s right Trevor, Donald Trump is white ISIS. WISIS,” Minhaj said.

The Indian-American comic is an interesting choice to headline the correspondent’s dinner, considering how well his performance at the Congressional Correspondents Dinner went last summer, Twitchy reports.

“After delivering the usual jokes about politicians like John Kasich and Hillary Clinton, the Daily Show correspondent devoted the last few minutes of his speech to speaking somberly about Sunday’s shooting massacre that killed 49 people at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, criticizing the congresspeople in the audience over their failure to fight for true equality in the U.S.,” according to People.

“As Minhaj spoke, the C-SPAN broadcast cut several times to the black-tie-attired dinner audience shifting uncomfortably in their seats, checking their phones – doing anything but laughing.”

Regardless, Minhaj is already using is invitation from the WHCA to lampoon Trump, who will not be attending the event designed to “fund the organization and … scholarships and awards aimed at promoting aspiring journalists and recognizing excellence in the journalism profession.”

“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD!” Minhaj said. “Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.”
