Hours after UK Prime Minister Theresa May called for an early general election, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange noted he is eligible to run for parliament.

“Since I am not sentenced (or even charged) with a crime and am an Australian I can run for UK parliament,” Assange tweeted on Wednesday, adding, “Haha.”

He linked to a UK law regarding who can run for office.

“A convicted person during the time that he is detained in a penal institution in pursuance of his sentence [F1or unlawfully at large when he would otherwise be so detained] is legally incapable of voting at any parliamentary or local government election,” it reads.

Assange’s story was challenged by a reader: “You+UN say you’re detained, so you can’t, unless you’re lying + not detained.”

He responded:

“The UK is in ongoing violation of the UN’s ruling (reconfirmed in appeal). It can’t have it both ways.”

PM May called for elections to be held June 8, three years ahead of schedule, the BBC reports.
