Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement concluded a six-week nationwide “gang surge” conducted by Homeland Security Investigations that netted 1,378 arrests, including nearly two dozen suspected murderers and 104 members of the infamous MS-13 gang.
ICE reports that 1,098 of the 1,378 arrested in the nationwide gang sweep will face federal or state criminal charges, including 21 on murder charges, seven rape arrests, and sexual assault charges. The remaining 280 arrested will face administrative immigration violations, according to the ICE website.
The crackdown was with largest gang surge operation ever conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, and it focused mostly on transnational criminal activity like drug, gun, and human smuggling, sex trafficking, murder and racketeering.
“Of the total arrested, 933 were U.S. citizens and 445 were foreign national from 21 countries in South and Central America, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean,” ICE wrote. “Numerous state, local and federal law enforcement partners, including ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, participated in the HIS-led operation, which ran March 26 to May 6.”
The vast majority of those arrested had known gang ties. They included 137 Bloods, 118 Surenos, 104 with MS-13, and 104 Crips.
The busts also recovered a lot of drugs, guns and cash.
“During this operation, HIS and its partner law enforcement agencies seized 238 firearms; various narcotics including 790.15 ounces of cocaine, 546.96 ounces of methamphetamine, 113.42 ounces of heroin, 1.59 ounces of fentanyl, and 8,019.46 ounces of marijuana; and $491,763 in U.S. currency,” ICE reports.
“Gangs threaten the safety of our communities, not just in major metropolitan areas but in our suburbs and rural areas, too,” ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan said. “Gang-related violence and criminal activity present an ongoing challenge for law enforcement everywhere. Our efforts to dismantle gangs are much more effective in areas where partnership with local law enforcement is strongest.”
Ten of the illegal immigrants arrested in the sweep came to the United States as unaccompanied minors and nine were confirmed gang members. Eight of them were members of MS-13.
Interestingly, three of the illegal immigrants were granted deferred action under former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
ICE reports that since the program began in 2012, DHS has canceled the deportation protections for about 1,500 DACA recipients who are affiliated with gangs or suspected of criminal activity.
The HSI gang surge is part of the broader Operation Community Shield launched in 2005 to target violent gangs and transnational organized crime groups that’s resulted in a total of more than 47,000 gang related arrests. Those arrests include 4,300 criminal arrests and nearly 3,000 civil immigration arrests of MS-13 leaders, members and associates, according to ICE.
