Texas U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert is calling out Congressional Republicans for abandoning President Trump after former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony in the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday.
Comey confirmed Trump’s repeated claims that he assured the president that he wasn’t personally under investigation as part of the FBI’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election, and alleged Trump’s stated reasons for firing him last month are “lies, plain and simple.”
Gohmert told Fox & friends on Friday that Congressional Republicans only made matters worse for Trump by taking the day off, leaving Comey’s testimony to simmer with the public instead of forging ahead on more important business.

“We were supposed to be in session today,” Gohmert said. “And, you know, that helps change the message back to what we’re doing, but Tuesday, apparently, our leadership changed the week’s scheduling and said ‘let’s go dark on Friday,’ which means the emphasis will not be on what we’re doing good in Washington.
“We’re basically leaving the president to dangle,” he said.
Gohmert said Republicans should do more to support the POTUS amid the Comey controversy.
“I’m very concerned we’re not being supportive enough to get the message out, and here President Trump is,” he continued. “As (Florida U.S. Rep.) Marco Rubio pointed out, the only thing that didn’t leak was the truth.”
Comey told lawmakers he met with Trump on numerous occasions and three times assured him that he was not personally under FBI investigation, but he refused the president’s repeated requests to make that fact public.
The former FBI director also said he leaked detailed notes he allegedly took after conversations with Trump to a “friend” at Columbia Law School, who then relayed the information to media outlets. Ironically, Comey also said many of the mainstream media reports about the Russian investigation based on alleged inside sources were completely wrong.
Comey insinuated that Trump pressured him into dropping an FBI investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn, though acknowledged that the president did not explicitly make the request.
Of course, Trump took to Twitter on Friday with his take on Comey’s testimony.
Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication…and WOW, Comey is a leaker!

“Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication,” Trump tweeted, “and WOW, Comey is a leaker!”
Trump also addressed some of Comey’s accusations during a press conference with Romanian President Klaus lohannis on Friday.
Trump denied he ever pressured Comey into dropping the investigation into Flynn’s alleged ties with Russians, according to CNN – a news agency that Trump has repeatedly referred to as “really fake news.”
“I didn’t say that,” Trump said.
He also disputed Comey’s claim that the president asked for his “loyalty,” though Trump said “there would be nothing wrong if I did say that.”
Trump told reporters he’s “very happy” after Comey’s testimony, which he boiled down to seven words during the Friday press conference in the Rose Garden, CNN alleges.
“No collusion, no obstruction, he’s a leaker,” Trump said.
