On November 9, 2016 — 254 days ago — Republicans learned they would be in total control of the federal government.
Two key issues rose to the surface: repealing Obamacare and a tax cut.
So far, they have failed at killing the failing program, despite all the bravado during the last four campaigns.
Now, it appears they’re taking their sweet time just getting around to writing the tax cut bill, let alone actually taking it up and passing it.
“The budget that’s going through Congress now is just the budget, it’s not the actual tax reform bill,” Ryan told Wisconsin talk radio host Stan Milam on Wednesday.
“That’s something that will be written in the fall,” he said, acknowledging Republicans haven’t even started yet.
So what has Ryan been doing instead of writing the tax bill?
On Thursday, he was in Massachusetts to tour a shoe factory and gab to the media.
Maybe we should cut him some slack: He talked about a tax cut, but he’s apparently going to wait until the fall to actually write the bill.
On Monday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned if Republicans don’t get serious about a tax bill soon, there’s a “real danger of Speaker Pelosi.”
During an appearance on Fox News, Gingrich urged Republicans to focus on economic growth.

“They have got to pass by Thanksgiving, and get signed into law, by Thanksgiving, a very large tax cut, retroactively designed back to January 1 to make sure that we have enough economic growth in 2018. That Republicans can run as the party of prosperity, of jobs, of higher take home pay, and of economic growth,” Gingrich said.
He said the “highest focus” should be getting the tax bill passed.
“If we don’t have economic growth next year, I think we’re in real danger of having Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2019,” Gingrich said.
