Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell wouldn’t talk about her party leaders during an appearance on CNN today.
Dingell, a rare Democrat who predicted Donald Trump would win Michigan last fall, awkwardly said she wouldn’t talk about Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and instead she wants to “focus on the issues.”
Dingell refused to say if new party leadership is needed.
“Why are we having this discussion? I represent my district and in my district, it’s my name that’s on that bumper sticker,” she said.
When host Poppy Harlow pushed back and said Pelosi and Schumer are the faces of the party and are involved in fundraising and decision-making, Dingell still refused to talk about them.
“I don’t think that’s the discussion that we need to be having right now, and I won’t have that discussion because I think that’s it’s people trying to divide us,” she said.
She added such talk was rooted in “fear and hatred.”
While Dingell refused to talk about Pelosi, her colleague Rep. Filemon Vela called her an “obvious obstacle.”
The Free Beacon reports:
In an interview with BuzzFeed, Vela, whose south Texas district is safely Democratic, said Pelosi was a clear “drag” on candidates in swing districts. Democrats are hoping to win back a majority in the House in 2018 for the first time since losing it to the GOP in 2010.
Historically, the party out of the White House does well in midterms.
“When we go to 2018, if we’re going to win the majority, Democrats have to win swing districts, which means winning independent voters, swing voters, and even Republican moderates,” Vela said. “The problem is that in that demographic … it is real clear that the drag on our candidates is Nancy Pelosi.”
“If you have an obvious obstacle, why not remove it?” he added.
