USA Today’s Susan Page is explaining why she believes Hillary Clinton penned her new book “What Happened” about her humiliating defeat to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Page, the Washington Bureau chief for USA Today, appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss her recent interview with Clinton, in which the Democratic presidential candidate continued to blame the Russians for keeping her from the White House.

Clinton wrote “What Happened,” she said, “to settle some scores.”

“Well, I think she wanted to settle some scores,” Page said, “including with James Comey and with Bernie Sanders and with others.

“And I think she also was wounded by the results of this election. She thought she was going to win this election and was going to be president-elect, and then president,” she continued.

“And she said it was pretty cathartic to go through the process of writing this book in this house they bought, this guest house they bought, with the idea of it being used by the Secret Service and presidential aides once she was president,” Page said.

“Did she offer any advice for the party moving forward?” host Mika Brezezinski questioned.

“Ya, she offers some advice like don’t pay attention to Bernie Sanders, who she says is not actually a Democrat and doesn’t have Democratic interests at heart,” Page said.

The comments follow Page’s recent interview with Clinton, which was published in USA Today on Monday.

The interview took place in a ranch home Clinton bought next to their larger home in August that she planned to use for her presidential help, once elected. Instead, she ended up using the house to pen “What Happened,” which was released by Simon & Shuster on Tuesday.

In both the interview and book, Clinton continues to heap blame for her failed presidential bid on the Russians, former FBI Director James Comey, and Democratic rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“There certainly was communication and there certainly was an understanding of some sort,” Clinton told Page. “Because there’s no doubt in my mind that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wanted me to lose and wanted Trump to win. And there’s no doubt in my mind that there are a tangle of financial relationships between Trump and his operation with Russian money. And there’s no doubt in my mind that the Trump campaign and other associates have worked really hard to hide their connections with Russians.”

Clinton wouldn’t use the word collusion, but said she’s “convinced” the Trump campaign coordinated with the Russians to block her from her rightful throne.

“I’m convinced of it,” Clinton said. “I happen to believe in the rule of law and believe in evidence, so I’m not going to go off and make all kinds of outrageous claims. But if you look at what we’ve learned since (the election), it’s pretty troubling.”

Clinton wrote the Comey “shivved” her with his handling of the FBI investigation into her illegal emails, and alleged it cost her last minute votes that could have put her over the top.

“My first instinct was that my campaign should hit back hard and explain to the public that Comey had badly overstepped his bounds,” she told Page. “My team raised concerns with that kind of confrontational approach. In the end, we decided it would be better to just let it go and try to move on. Looking back, that was a mistake.”
