Hillary Clinton lost only because no qualified Democrat could have beaten Donald Trump, according to a bit of revisionist history delivered by a longtime Hillary aide.

Phillipe Reines told a group of college students on Thursday that only Barack Obama could have defeated President Trump in the last presidential election.

But Obama, of course, was term limited and constitutionally barred from running again.

“In hindsight, there were some very big problems that would have affected any Democrat,” Reines said at an event at The Washington Center.

“I don’t think any Democrat would have beaten Donald Trump, aside from President Obama. … And I think that because if you look at polling, I think that one out of every five voters came out and said they voted for Donald Trump, they had voted for Barack Obama in 2012, and they continued to approve of the job Barack Obama was doing last year,” he said.

Reines argued that if Hillary had been replaced on the ballot by sitting Vice President Joe Biden, it wouldn’t have made any difference.

“Joe Biden … would have been bogged down by Obamacare, he would have been bogged down by trade, he would have been bogged down by being in Washington for decades, and those thing alone were probably dispositive,” he said, not explaining why those issues wouldn’t have negatively impacted Obama, as well.

“Everyone assumes when they say ‘X would have won,’ they assume X would have gotten what Hillary Clinton got, and added some,” he said. “And I think that’s a really silly way to look at it.

“Other people would not have gotten what she got,” he argued, noting in his remarks that she spent a billion dollars, only to lose.
