“Then was then, and now is now,” according to Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Waters was defending her ever-shifting position on former FBI Director James Comey, and whether or not she believes allegations about the president outlined in his new book.

MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes confronted the 79-year-old career politician about her apparent duplicity with a video of Waters trashing Comey after a classified briefing shortly before the presidential transition in January 2017.

“Congresswoman, can you tell us anything about the discussion in the briefing?” a reporter asked Waters in the clip.

“No, it’s classified and we can’t tell you anything,” Waters shot back.

“All I can tell you is the FBI director has no credibility!” she huffed, storming away from the microphones.

Waters laughed out loud as Hayes played the clip, then went on to defend herself for more recent comments in support of Comey’s book, which trashes Waters’ favorite foe.

“You and Donald Trump do agree on that, that sentence you said ‘the FBI director has no credibility,’” Hayes said.

“Absolutely not,” Waters replied. “I tried to clarify that to say yes, coming out of that classified briefing I said that and I certainly meant it. However I think it’s quite different when you take a look at Comey and his relationship to the president, what he said, what he’s done. I believe him.”

“You believe him?” Hayes questioned.

“I believe him, yes,” Waters said. “So then was then, and now is now.”

The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra summed it up for Twitter.

“California Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters: ‘I certainly meant it’ when I said Comey ‘has no credibility’ – except for when he talks bad about Trump – then ‘I believe him,’” Saavedra posted.

Folks on Twitter didn’t seem surprised by the hypocrisy.

“I can’t breathe,” Nat Barnett posted. “It’s just toooo laughable.”

“The sad part is she’ll get re-elected,” Patrick Folger added. “I’m ashamed to be in her district.”

“It’s moments like this that color matters to me, because she makes me wish she wasn’t black. It’s a damned shame people like her are elected to leadership status in black communities, the Klan can go on vacation now.”

“This woman is an influential democrat,” user “praying for a better world” wrote. “Goes to show how low the dems have sunk.”

“She is a walking disaster and I love it,” Eric Weiss added. “Give her all the camera time possible. Better than any political ad for why you should vote republican/independent.”
