Lena Epstein can join Sarah Sanders and Pam Bondi at the table for women who have been shunned for supporting President Trump.
Epstein, a candidate running for Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, says the Franklin Hills Country Club in Farmington Hills canceled a fundraiser for her campaign over her “political views.”
“Several days ago, I was told that a fundraiser being held for me at Franklin Hills Country Club, where my family has been members for generations had been cancelled,” Epstein says in a statement.
“Upon hearing this, I was upset, but did not want to make the issue public. The situation escalated when it was published on social media, and picked up by a news outlet. After seeing what’s been happening across the country to Republicans like Sarah Sanders and Pam Bondi, I wanted the opportunity to share what happened to me.
“The event had been scheduled and confirmed for over a month, and was fully compliant with Franklin Hills rules. That’s why it was so unsettling to hear by those who cancelled the event, the decision was made because they disagreed with my political views,” she says.
Epstein defends backing Trump, saying, “Although I’ve never been bashful about my support of President Trump, I have never shamed others for disagreeing with me.”
According to Epstein, a Democratic candidate recently held a fundraiser at the very same club.
“Just one month ago, members of Franklin Hills hosted a fundraiser for the brother of CNN’s Sanjay Gupta, Suneel Gupta, a Democrat who is also running for the 11th Congressional District seat. The same Franklin Hills that cancelled my event for political reasons,” she says.
“It’s deeply disappointing Republicans are being held to a separate set of standards.”
Epstein served as the Co-Chairman of the Donald J. Trump for President campaign in Michigan.
Trump won the state over Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin, the first time a Republican has won the state since 1988.
