New York Democratic Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is all-in for impeaching President Donald Trump.
While speaking to reporters Friday on Capitol Hill, the 29-year-old socialist was asked if it was premature to begin discussing impeachment.
“Not to me,” she said, arguing that when Democrats take control of the U.S. House of Representatives in January, they should not wait to begin impeachment proceedings.
She went on to say that there’s no need to wait any longer because “we have far surpassed” the “standard” that the Republican Party used to impeach former President Bill Clinton.
The New York Democrat claimed the plea deal reached by Michael Cohen, the president’s former attorney, with Special Counsel Robert Mueller justified impeaching Trump.
Cohen admitted to making false statements to Congress about discussions roughly a year before the 2016 election to construct a Trump Tower in Moscow, Russia.
Trump has denied any involvement in the project and tweeted that he never put up any money for it. Trump has also called for Cohen to serve a harsh prison sentence for lying.
“I’ve been supportive of impeachment for some time now so I think it just adds to the case,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I mean, it’s just, this is ridiculous. This is outrageous. In 1998, the entire Republican Party decides to impeach Bill Clinton over what standard? And the fact that they have to raise that standard to go above and beyond.”
When asked to specify what she meant by the “standard” that “we have surpassed,” Ocasio-Cortez rambled and couldn’t point to be specific example that implicated Trump or would warrant his impeachment.
“Well, I just think, overall, when you look at the broad stroke they took, how far they would take it, and how granularly they would dig into that process,” she said, not aware that “granularly” is not a word while she peddled baseless liberal talking points.
Last month, Ocasio-Cortez told Univision anchor Jorge Ramos on his show “Real America” that it’s a “no-brainer” that Trump should be impeached.
“I mean, yeah. To me, it’s a no-brainer,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Well, I believe that he has violated the law. Violated potentially many laws, whether it’s the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution because he keeps his businesses open that foreign actors kind of participate in financial transactions with. Whether it’s what we are seeing with potentially illegal buyouts of campaign, you know, FEC violations of women that he is trying to silence,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez went to say impeaching Trump should not be “beyond the pale” and made another non-relevant reference to Clinton.
“But overall, you look at the bar that the Republicans held for impeaching Bill Clinton and somehow impeaching Donald Trump is supposed to be beyond the pale? It seems ridiculous to me,” she added.
Clinton was impeached in the U.S. House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice with regards to his later admitted affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
Conversely, Trump has not been charged with a single crime nor has he made any admission of guilt.
There was no “standard” with Clinton, as Ocasio-Cortez claimed. The former president admitted to lying under oath and obstructing justice regarding his affair in the White House with an intern.
Trump has not been charged with a single crime, meaning there’s no basis or justification for impeachment proceedings.
While she’s likely just pushing liberal talking points to rile up her supporters, this is part of what Ocasio-Cortez will support when she’s officially sworn in next month.
She’s also the same soon-to-be lawmaker who supports “segmenting” people, has flirted with a possible presidential run in the future, and recently compared her election victory in a deep blue New York district to the moon landing and the Civil Rights movement.
