Democrats are currently at odds over whether a white male should run for president in 2020.
While some liberals don’t think it’s the “right time” for a “white guy” to seek the Democratic nomination in the upcoming presidential election, outgoing California Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown has a much different viewpoint.
During an interview with the Associated Press, Brown was asked about his thoughts on the 2020 election and the growing list of potential Democratic candidates.
Brown responded by saying that white men will “probably be running things for quite a bit of time” and asked, “What’s wrong with white men?”
“Look, it’s not the skin color, it’s who’s the right person with the right set of qualities to lead the nation,” Brown said. “That can be a man or a woman, it can be someone of a background other than what we’ve seen for most of our history.”
In October, Michael Avenatti, the “creepy porn lawyer” who represents adult film star Stormy Daniels, came under fire for saying the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee “better be a white male.”
“I think it better be a white male,” he said. “When you have a white male making the arguments, they carry more weight. Should they carry more weight? Absolutely not. But do they? Yes.”
Several top Democrats and prominent media figures strongly disagree with Brown’s and Avenatti’s assessment, and believe white males should steer clear of considering a presidential run in 2020.
Sen. Kamala Harris, D-CA, who is also likely eyeing a potential 2020 run, also told the AP that she would “hope” that her party’s presidential nominee would represent the country in terms of “race and gender.”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., told CNN’s Van Jones earlier this month that she was worried that the three current frontrunners in a 2020 poll — Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Robert “Beto” O’Rourke — are white men.
“I aspire for our country to recognize the beauty of our diversity in some point in the future, and I hope someday we have a woman president,” Gillibrand said.
Earlier this month, CNN’s Alisyn Camerota used a similar liberal talking point and appeared to suggest that any Democrat considering a run for president in 2020 should check their race before making a final decision.
During a segment on CNN’s “New Day,” Camerota asked Colorado Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper if 2020 is “the right time” for a “white guy” to run for president.
“You know the debate that the Democratic Party is having right now — is it time to have somebody of color and a woman and somebody younger?” Camerota asked. “Or somebody more establishment?”

“As a white guy, are you trying to calculate whether or not this is the right time for you?” Camerota asked.
“Well, this is the time it’s worked out,” Hickenlooper said, noting that his term as the governor of Colorado ends after this year.
Hickenlooper, who is hardly known nationally, has reportedly been interviewing potential campaign managers ahead of his decision.
Aside from a major fight brewing within the Democratic Party over skin color rather than ideas, Democrats may have an even bigger issue on their hands.
According to a recent poll by Hill.TV, “none of the above” is one of the most popular choices for Democratic voters when asked who they would like to see challenge President Donald Trump in 2020.
“Thirty percent of the sample said they would prefer that ‘none of the above’ become the Democratic nominee,” the report found.
The poll shows that there’s no clear frontrunner.
But according to this newfound liberal logic, any candidate who is a white male should consider not running for president in 2020.
