Special Counsel Robert Mueller didn’t call the maligned BuzzFeed story an “absolute lie,” and therefore President Trump should be impeached, according to Maxine Waters.
During an appearance on MSNBC this morning, the California Congresswoman attempted to rescue the smoldering carcass that is the “bombshell” story that Trump ordered his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress.
Referring to Mueller, Waters said, “He didn’t say, for example, that it’s an absolute lie, that it is absolutely not true.
“The way he framed it, he made it sound as if there were some problems with the way that BuzzFeed did it, but it did not absolutely close out the possibility that what BuzzFeed is saying has a lot of truth to it.”
No matter the major concerns about the story, Waters believes Trump should be impeached.
“I’ve talked about it for a long time, I think it’s inevitable,” Waters said.
“Everything that I have seen about this president, whether it is what I have seen with collusion or with obstruction of justice, with his lies, with so many things that he’ve (sic) done, I certainly think that he qualifies for impeachment, and if it takes (Mueller) a little bit longer, if they’re all waiting on Mueller to give them permission, okay, that’s fine, but the fact of the matter is, this president should be impeached,” she said.
Waters added she doesn’t agree with “waiting” for Mueller’s report to use as cover for bringing up articles of impeachment against Trump.
“If the leadership and others have decided that’s what they want to do, I guess, that’s what they’re going to do, but I have to tell you, I believe in the final analysis, they can only come to that conclusion,” she said.
Waters also used the opportunity to denounce Trump’s immigration compromise to end the partial government shutdown.
“I believe we need comprehensive immigration reform, not some phony, fake wall that this president promised in an election without even having the information data, the analyzing to support that,” she said.
She ended the “Moment of Maxine” appearance by saying, “This president must be impeached!”
About the disputed story, The Daily Caller reports:
The Special Counsel’s office disputed a Thursday night report by BuzzFeed claiming that President Donald Trump directed his lawyer to lie about a potential business deal in Moscow during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The BuzzFeed report was used to float impeachment proceedings and obstruction of justice charges against the president, but Mueller’s team disputed the core premise of the reporting.
“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
