Those who violate the law to illegally enter the United States should be given special treatment at the expense of the American taxpayer.
That’s the twisted logic of Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-WA, who argued on Friday that Americans owe “reparations” to illegal aliens.
During an interview on MSNBC with host Joy Reid, Jayapal discussed Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee last week as well as the issue of family separation among illegal aliens detained in the U.S.
“I’m proud of my passion, Mr. Whitaker. We all should show real passion and a real commitment to fixing what was done to these families and these children. This is lasting trauma for thousands of children—we must make reparations,” Jayapal wrote in a tweet, which included a clip of the MSNBC interview.

Jayapal argued that detaining illegal aliens is “a heinous crime that has been committed on thousands of children.”
The Democratic lawmaker went to slam Whitaker for what she called a “dismissive” attitude during the hearing, referring to her line of questioning with him.
“This is an issue that I know there is a lot of passion about,” Whitaker said during the hearing in response to Jayapal’s aggressive line of question. “I appreciate your passion, it’s something we share together.”
“If we all don’t have real passion, real commitment to figuring out what happened and making reparations, the U.S. government should make reparations for what we have done to these families,” Jayapal said.
In June, Health and Human Services released a press release detailing the difference in how immigration cases are adjudicated, stating that it plays a role family separation when there are issues of child safety.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services (HHS) have a process established to ensure that family members know the location of their children and have regular communication after separation to ensure that those adults who are subject to removal are reunited with their children for the purposes of removal. The United States government knows the location of all children in its custody and is working to reunite them with their families.
As part of the apprehension, detention and prosecution process, illegal aliens, adults and children, are initially detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before the children are sent to HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) and parents to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Each entity plays a role in reunification. This process is well coordinated.
This is the second time in a month that Jayapal has made outrageous comments about President Trump.
Last month, she argued that Trump’s goal is to make America “pure” and bizarrely claimed he wants to eliminate “folks of color” in the U.S.
“Do you think a deal can be made, or do you think this is fundamentally existential and cannot be made?” MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked, referring to the previous government shutdown and striking an immigration deal.
“It’s fundamentally existential if he continues to insist on a wall,” Jayapal said. “This has never been about a wall. He actually could have gotten funding a couple of years ago, or a year ago, for a wall. It was part of a deal proposed, not all of us agreed with that deal, but it was proposed to him and he turned it down because his ultimate goal is, as you said, to ‘make America pure’ in the sense of not having immigrants, not having folks of color here, and shutting down every form of legal immigration.”
“All to throw a bone to those people,” she said, presumably referring to racists, who she implied were part of Trump’s base.
