Democrat Rep. Gregory Meeks wants Bernie Sanders and his legion of fans to take their political power somewhere else.
Meeks — who endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 primary — told CNN that Sanders is not a Democrat and therefore should not be “allowed” to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
When asked if he agreed that a “flaw” for Sanders is that he’s an old white male, Meeks said, “The difference for me is that he’s not a Democrat.
“So I don’t understand why Bernie Sanders, who does not want to become a member of the Democratic Party,” he said.
When challenged with the notion that Sanders would govern as a Democrat, Meeks wasn’t satisfied.
“No, no, run as a Democrat,” he said.
“We’ve asked him on a continuous basis, if in fact you want to be the Democratic nominee, you should be a Democrat,” Meeks accentuated.
“If you’re not a Democrat, you should not run— you should run as an Independent. He’s not a Democrat, so to me, I would not allow a Republican to run as a Democrat, for the Democratic nominee,” he said.
“He should be a Democrat,” Meeks again said when asked if Sanders “should not be allowed to run”.
“I think that he should say if he wants to be a Democrat, he should register in the Democratic Party, and then we can talk about running to be my representative,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sanders is raking in the bucks in his bid to be the Democratic nominee.
The Daily Mail reports:
President Donald Trump returned to a 2016-vintage nickname for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday, calling him ‘Crazy Bernie’ on Twitter after the 77-year-old Vermonter blasted him as a racist and a loose cannon.
Sanders, 77, entered the 2020 presidential race Tuesday morning. His campaign announced 14 hours later that 150,000 donors had contributed $4 million to the effort. By Wedesday morning that number reached $6 million.
At least $600,000 of that haul came in the form of contributions that will renew monthly.
“‘We are running against a president who is a pathological liar, a fraud, a racist, a sexist, a xenophobe, and someone who is undermining American democracy as he leads us in an authoritarian direction,” Sanders said in his campaign announcement video.
