Maybe Joe Biden’s fans are starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with him, too.
Biden was in Manning, Iowa on Tuesday to unveil his plans for rural America, and started the event off with an awkward gaffe that left supporters laughing nervously.
He was introducing local dignitaries and said, “I’ve been in Carroll County before, a number of times, and I want to say hello to the Democratic Party chair, Peter Leo. Peter, where are you?” Biden said, looking out into the audience.
“There you go. I mean, excuse me,” he said, closing his eyes in anguish for several painful moments as some chuckles rose from the small audience.
“I want to say hello to the mayor, I meant to say. And uh, Mayor Harvey Dales. Where’s Harvey? There you go, Harvey,” he said towards the side of the stage. “Thank you, man.”
“Being mayor’s a real job — you know where you live,” he joked as only a couple people responded with laughter.
It’s not clear why Biden didn’t want to say hello to the local Democratic official.
That wasn’t Biden’s only faux pas. He seemed to have trouble reading the teleprompter and notes for his speech.
“We don’t need to prioritize what we are, uh, the challenges that are…here for you as well as they are in our cities,” he said.
Criticizing President Trump’s agriculture policies, he said, “It’s not just about impacting farmers. It ripples throughout the entire economy, hitting other industries that support agriculture. Hurting organized labor, closing, closing and costing consumers every single day in the household goods they pay.”
“And I’m going to dramatically expland— expand the conservation and stewardship program so that farmers who sequester carbon in the soil can also be partners with companies in urban areas that are interested in reducing green house gas— gases and gain additional revenue streams from this process,” he stumbled.
“Add that massive investment in wind generation, solar energy in rural America will be America’s clean energy capital of the world,” Biden said.
