A snafu with California voter registration records could mean some Republican voters many not get to cast ballots during the March 3 primary if they don’t re-register with their party.

Voters in several counties received notices this week informing them they’re registered as “No Party Preference” with their county registrar of voters, which means they will receive a primary ballot that does not include presidential candidates, KPIX reports.

Action News Now reporter Spencer Joseph posted a picture of the postcard mailed to voters in Shasta County on Facebook. In many places, voters insist they’ve already registered their party affiliation, but claim it was changed to “Non-Party Affiliated” by mistake.

“We got 80 calls yesterday,” a Contra Costa County official told the news site last week. “People panic. There’s a lot of interest in the upcoming primary.”

Johnathan Thurman told Joseph his son was registered as a Republican, but still received a notice from the Shasta County registrar of voters notifying him about his “no party preference.” To make matters worse, the card he received in the mail doesn’t allow Republicans to re-register by return mail.

“My son received a card in the mail from the Shasta County registrar of voters and I happened to look at the card and the card had every party but Republican on it,” he said.

The card asks voters to “Mark your single ballot choice below and return this card no later than January 3, 2020.” It provides four ballot options for “Nonpartisan,” “American Independent Party,” “Democratic Party” or Libertarian Party.”

“If you do not respond by January 3, 2020, you will receive a ballot that does not include candidates for president,” the card warns.

The backside of the mailing provided the reason Republicans aren’t included on the other side.

“The American Independent, Democratic and Libertarian parties are allowing Nonpartisan voters to participate in their election. If you choose to vote in one of these three party ballots, you will be able to vote for that party’s presidential candidates,” the document read. “When you select a political party ballot for this election it WILL NOT permanently change your party.”

“The Green, Peace and Freedom and Republican parties have chosen to NOT ALLOW Nonpartisan voters to participate in their presidential primary elections,” the note continued. “If you wish to vote for one of these three party presidential candidates, you will need to re-register for that party. You can re-register at registertovote.ca.gov before February 17th.”

Local election officials told KPIX the issue stems from a DMV motor voter registration program launched in 2008.

“We have heard from some voters were going to the DMV that they were registered with a particular party and they got one of these postcards,” Shasta County Clear and Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling-Allen told Action News Now.

The news site reports an Associated Press investigation last year found one error that may have prevented 600 people from voting, and another that allowed 1,500 to register to vote who did not qualify.

DMV officials contend there’s no problems with the motor voter program that they’re “aware of.”

“The DMV is not aware of a computer glitch or system issue related to voter registration. DMV worked in partnership with the Secretary of State’s office to implement improvements to the party preference portion of the registration process in January 2019,” the department wrote in a prepared statement.

Regardless, a Contra Costa County voter who wrote in to The American Mirror said “this mistake really only impacts those who were registered as Republicans.

“As of late, it seems that mistakes always favor everyone but the Republican Party coincidently,” he wrote.

The bottom line for California Republicans, according to Darling-Allen: “If you’ve been to the DMV since April of 2018, please double check your voter registration.”
