5 Cool Things to Do on a Mac

If you’ve just bought a Mac and this is your first time using one then there’ll be lots of things to learn about how to use it. Alternatively, if you’ve been a Mac user for a while, then you might need a refresher on the amazing things you can do on your desktop or laptop.

Customize Your App Icons

One of the cool things to do on a Mac is to customize your app icons. This neat personalization will help you organize your apps to ensure you know where they are and what they look like.

If you haven’t already, download the icon from the internet. Then you need to select the icon, which will either be .png or .jpeg, and open it. Click edit and select all, and copy the selection.

You should note that regular .png files won’t work, because they have a transparent background. So, if possible, find icons that are .jpeg.

Then you need to find the app that you want to add the new icon to. This manual process won’t work with Apple apps but should work with most other apps.

Select the app you want to change the icon of, and click on get info. (Or you can use the keyboard shortcut Command and I.) Select the small icon in the top left corner of the app and paste the new icon there, by using the keyboard shortcut Command and V.

If you choose to, you can later remove the icon by pressing get info and then clicking on delete on your keyboard.

Get Social

There are several cool things to do with your Mac in terms of getting social. One thing you can do is send and receive texts on your Mac.

For a while now, Apple users have been able to message other iPhone users from the iMessage app on their Mac. But now you can also send and receive messages to anyone regardless of their phone brand.

You can access all the messages from your iPhone on your Mac whenever you want. On your Mac, you’ll be able to see every up-to-date text message you’ve sent and received.

As well as the above, you can also start new SMS messages or iMessage conversations from your Mac. All you need to do is click on the phone number in Contacts, Safari, Calendar, or Spotlight.

You can also keep in touch with your group chats too. With this feature, you can view friends that have shared their location, add or remove someone in the chat, and name a group chat by clicking on details.

To make use of these social features on your Mac, all you need to do is sign into your Mac using the same iMessage account that has your phone number linked to it. Then turn on Text Message Forwarding for your Mac, which can be found in Settings and then Messages on your iPhone.

You can also use your Mac to send direct messages on Instagram. Find out more about how to DM on Instagram on your Mac.
